Students of Tennant Creek High School warmly greeted the Convo Convoy this morning interacting with the crew, and listening to experiences and advice from R U OK? Ambassadors Jake Gablonski and Jacob Ridgeway.
Kyrell Barton gave a warm welcome to country and the morning kicked off with a video about the Conversation Convoy. The video led to a discussion around the theme for the event – the importance of checking in with one another. Students described the signs that could indicate a friend, brother, sister or cousin may not be ok, including not turning up to school or footy training.
Students listened to Jacob Ridgeway’s performances and asked about his love of music in the subsequent Q&A. Jake Gablonski spoke of his experiences with the Clontarf Foundation and how he used it as an opportunity to improve his own mental health, further his education and check in with mates.
Following the presentation, teachers Ms Langley-Freeman and Ms Kaija Keski-Nummi and a student cooked a free BBQ for all in attendance and picked up giveaways including Liptember lanyards to raise awareness of women’s mental health and R U OK? postcards to write notes to family and friends in other states and territories.
Special thanks to principal Maisie Floyd and Kaija Keski-Nummi for bringing the event to the school.
The Conversation Convoy continues its journey with next stop: Mt Isa (Queensland).
