Local residents of Halls Creek interacted with the
Conversation Convoy as the school bell rang and children moved towards Shire
Park.
Jake Hay, Regional Program Manager of (Youth) Shire of Halls Creek, gave a passionate introduction to plans for a 30-year Kimberley program currently in development, and encouraged local residents including suicide prevention experts to vote for priority focuses such as boarding school support, community outreach and youth recreational services.
Karri Ambler, Support After Suicide, joined the gathering along with Dr Nicole Jeffery-Dawes, Kimberley Suicide Prevention Coordinator at Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Services. Wesley Mission representative, Steve, also made the drive from Darwin to connect with local suicide prevention network colleagues.
Children made their way around the 4 Step activations and took away stickers, wristbands and postcards whilst enjoying the BBQ which was put on by representatives of the Shire’s Youth Advisory Council.
R U OK? Ambassador Jacob Ridgeway sang to the gathered crowd and showed the children how to use the microphone to share their own voices.
Special thanks to Jake Hay, Karri Ambler and Dr Nicole Jeffery-Dawes for their efforts spreading the word and bringing the event to life on the ground.
The Conversation Convoy continues its journey with next stop: Fitzroy Crossing (Western Australia).
