The Darwin Railway Club was at capacity last night as locals
and visitors showed their support of R U OK?
Legendary singer-songwriter John Schumann (ex Redgum) & Friends performed to the sell-out crowd. The audience were captivated by the 90-minute performance and John’s words of acknowledgement for those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and the ups and downs of those who work the land in NT. John highlighted the need to look out for one another amongst those who are fighting battles and injuries that we cannot see.
The Conversation Convoy was greeted the following morning by the friendly students and teachers of Bakewell Primary School.
Students Campbell and Caitlin opened the event by sharing their own words of what R U OK? means to them. Chief Minister Michael Gunner then welcomed those gathered by highlighting stressors that students may face such as moving schools or home. Minister Gunner encouraged students to keep that in mind as they look out for one another every day.
R U OK? Ambassador Jacob Ridgeway sang for the young students after reflecting on the first time he was asked the question after losing a footy match and was feeling down before a friend checked in with him. The students clapped along to the music and called out the 4 Steps to a conversation by calling out the letters ALEC (Ask, Listen, Encourage action, and Check in).
Special thanks to School Principal, Paul Nyhuis, and School Counsellor, Annette Murphy, for their efforts.
The Conversation Convoy continues its journey with next stop: Katherine (Northern Territory).
